Consolidated Edison of NY

Project: Asbestos Abatement Project

Relevant Experience

Summary

This project required the removal of large amount of asbestos insulation from piping and system components at two of Consolidated Edison's fossil fired steam electric stations in New York City. Staging, enclosure construction, asbestos removal and disposal, and demobilization had to be coordinated with plant maintenance and other outage activities. A total of approximately 2,000 cubic yards of asbestos were removed within a three-month performance window.

Performance History

The asbestos present on the steam piping, heaters, feed pumps and valves at two electric generating stations in New York City was removed. Approximately 500 cubic yards of asbestos were removed from the Astoria generating stations within a six-week period. When completed, appromximately 1,500 cubic yards of asbestos will have been removed from the Arthur Kill generating station. A performance window of approximately three months existed for completion of this work. This work was completed within this time envelope and within budget.

Both of these operations (i.e. Astoria and Arthur Kill) required close coordination with plant personnel to interface properly with planned maintenance activities. Each project also had a very short schedule to limit plant down time. HVE has satisifed these requirements at Astoria and we are on schedule for meeting our objectives at Arthur Kill as well.

Our ability to achieve favorable results under difficult circumstances are due to our employment of skilled riggers, ironworkers and other trades who we have trained in the skills of asbestos removal, decontamination and remediation. There are many ways to plan this type of work. The multiple skills of our personnel allow us to consider options others may not recognize.
